After two pregnancies (the second one to twins) I had to process and deal with the effects they had brought to my body. Οne of them was the stretch marks that had remained on various parts of my body.
Stretch marks, though common, can be bothersome for a lot of women. While they typically fade over time, there are a few natural remedies that may help improve their appearance or prevent them from forming:
Exfoliation
Regular exfoliation can help remove dead skin cells and improve blood circulation, which may aid in the reduction of stretch marks. You can make a natural exfoliating scrub using ingredients like sugar, coffee grounds, or oatmeal mixed with a moisturizing oil. Apply and rub with a brush while taking a bath. It only takes two minutes and it is worth it. Your skin afterwards will be soft and prepared to receive the moisturizers.
Moisturize frequently
Keeping the skin well-hydrated can improve its elasticity and reduce the likelihood of stretch marks forming. Natural moisturizers like cocoa butter, shea butter, almond oil, coconut oil, or plain olive oil can be applied regularly to keep the skin supple. Apply a mixture of oils every night before sleep on the problem areas. Keep it next to your bed so that you won’t forget and be consistent.
For best results combine the following ingredients.
Aloe Vera: Aloe vera gel is known for its soothing and healing properties. Applying aloe vera gel directly to stretch marks may help to reduce their appearance over time. You can use it by its own or in a mixture with some oils mentioned here for even better results.
Vitamin E: Vitamin E oil is believed to have antioxidant properties that can help promote skin healing and repair. Applying vitamin E oil directly to stretch marks may help improve their appearance.
Coconut Oil: Coconut oil contains fatty acids and antioxidants that can help nourish and moisturize the skin. Applying coconut oil to stretch marks regularly may help to fade them over time.
Here’s a simple DIY recipe for a natural stretch mark treatment using a combination of moisturizing and exfoliating ingredients:
Exfoliating 1/4 cup of brown sugar or coffee grounds1 tablespoon of raw honey or 2 tbsps of moisturizing cream if you don’t want it to be so thick
Hydration 1/4 cup of organic coconut oil (or almond oil) 1/2 cup of body butter 1 tablespoon of vitamin E oil 1/4 cup of Aloe Vera gel
Instructions: For hydration mixture: Pour the coconut oil, vitamin E oil, Aloe Vera gel and body butter in a container and stir until well combined. For exfoliating mixture: Pour brown sugar or coffee grounds and moisturizing cream into a clean, airtight container or jar and mix well.
Application: To use, take a small amount of the exfoliating mixture first and massage it onto the areas with stretch marks in gentle, circular motions using a brush. Focus on massaging the skin for a few minutes to help improve circulation. After rinsing off and wiping use an amount of the hydration mixture all over the problem areas and massage thoroughly. You can choose to rinse off the mixture after massaging, or you can leave it on overnight for deeper hydration and treatment. Storage: Store the remaining mixture in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. It should keep for several weeks to a month, depending on the freshness of the ingredients used.
Use this DIY stretch mark treatment regularly, preferably daily, for best results. Remember that consistency is key, and it may take some time to see noticeable improvements in the appearance of your stretch marks. Additionally, discontinue use if you experience any irritation or adverse reactions, and consult with a healthcare professional if you have any concerns.
Don’t forget to Stay Hydrated
Drinking plenty of water is essential for maintaining skin hydration and elasticity. Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water per day to keep your skin healthy and hydrated. It’s not only the outside but also the inside hydration that’ important for your body in order to stay smooth and unmarked.
Lemon Juice
Lemon juice contains natural acids that can help exfoliate the skin and promote cell turnover. Applying fresh lemon juice to stretch marks and leaving it on for about 10 minutes before rinsing off may help lighten their appearance.
Healthy Diet
Eating a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, particularly vitamins A, C, and E, can help maintain healthy skin and promote healing. Foods like fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains are all beneficial for skin health.
Exercise
Regular exercise can improve circulation and promote skin elasticity, potentially reducing the risk of developing stretch marks. Aim for a combination of cardiovascular exercise and strength training to keep your skin healthy and toned.
Maintain a Healthy Weight
Rapid weight gain or loss can contribute to the formation of stretch marks. By maintaining a healthy weight through balanced diet and regular exercise, you can reduce the likelihood of developing new stretch marks.
It’s important to note that while these natural remedies may help improve the appearance of stretch marks for some people, results can vary, and it may take some time to see noticeable changes but you will if you are consistent with the treatment.
